Vijay (Guru Dutt) is a passionate poet whose radical work about the rich and poor divide is not taken seriously by his family members. Despite tireless efforts, he fails to find a publisher, until he meets his ex-girlfriend who's married to one. But life's not fair to Vijay, who is soon robbed of his craft, thrown into a mental asylum, disowned by his family and fooled time and again. He finds a genuine and devoted reader in a courtesan who tries to help him. Will Vijay get credit for his work now that the nation seems to lap it up? Will the audience recognise the real poet?
