Devdas (Dilip Kumar) and Parvati (Suchitra Sen) are inseparable as children and grow up to loving each other, even though Devdas is sent to a boarding school. A chain of events lead to Parvati being married off to someone else and Devdas finding solace in alcohol. Chandramukhi (Vyjayanthimala), a prostitute, works in a brothel that Devdas frequently visits. She falls in love with him and gives up her career to save him, but Devdas is unable to forget his childhood love. When he is pronounced critical due to his drinking, Devdas remembers the promise he had made to Parvati, of seeing her once before he dies. In an attempt to keep the promise, he travels to her house. Will he see Parvati again?
