Bholanath (Shashi Kapoor), the long-lost son of a police officer, is raised by a veteran thief, Mr. John (David Abraham). Bholanath carries out petty robberies along with his female accomplice and former lover, Sharmili (Zeenat Aman). While carrying out a heist, the duo stumbles upon an unpublished manuscript for a book titled, 'Chori Mera Kaam', a how-to-do-it guide on stealing. To make money, they sell the manuscript to a shady publisher and it ends up becoming a nationwide bestseller. It soon is the go-to guide for criminals to commit crimes successfully. The success of the book and the rise in criminal activities attract the attention of the police, the local mob, and the writer of the book himself. How do Bholanath and Sharmili come out of this mess?
